What is xylene
dimethylbenzene (dimethylbenzene) is an organic compound, C8H10, colorless transparent liquid, is the benzene ring of two hydrogen replaced by methyl products, there are three kinds of isomers, interbenzene, in the industry, xylene refers to the mixture of the above isomers. Xylene is pungent, flammable, and can be mixed with ethanol, chloroform or ether, and is insoluble in water. The boiling point is 137 ~ 140℃.
On October 27, 2017, the preliminary list of carcinogens published by the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer was collated for reference, and xylene was in the list of 3 types of carcinogens.
Uses and properties of xylene

1, xylene is widely used in coating, resin, dye, ink and other industries as a solvent.
2, used in medicine, explosives, pesticides and other industries to do synthetic monomer or solvent.
3. It can also be used as a high-octane gasoline component and is an important raw material for organic chemical industry.
4, it can also be used to remove the asphalt of the body.
5, the hospital pathology department mainly uses preparations.
6, mainly used for dehydration, dewaxing and so on.
The dangers of xylene
1. Acute poisoning of xylene: Inhalation of relatively high concentrations of xylene in a short period of time may result in obvious irritation of the eyes and upper respiratory tract, such as congestion of the conjunctival and pharynx, dizziness, headache, nausea, chest tightness, weakness of limbs, confusion of consciousness, and stumbling gait. In severe cases, there may be agitation, convulsion or coma, and hysteric-like symptoms;
2, xylene chronic poisoning: there will be neurasthenic syndrome, women can lead to abnormal menstruation, skin contact can occur dry skin, chapped, dermatitis.
Xylene protection measures
Respiratory system protection: When the concentration in the air is high, wear a filter gas mask (half mask). During emergency rescue or evacuation, it is recommended to wear an air respirator.
Eye protection: Wear chemical safety glasses.
Body protection: Wear protective work clothes.
Hand protection: Wear rubber gloves.
Others: Smoking, eating and drinking are prohibited on site. After work, shower and change. Pay attention to personal hygiene.
Xylene first aid measures
Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing and rinse skin thoroughly with soapy water and clean water.
Eye contact: Lift eyelids and rinse with running water or saline. Seek medical attention.
Inhalation: Quickly remove from the scene to fresh air. Keep your airway clear. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. If breathing stops, give artificial respiration immediately. Seek medical attention.
Ingestion: Drink enough water to induce vomiting. Seek medical attention.
